Bordering Spanish and French Catalonia, we have the microstate of Andorra, which has created a national narrative based on Charlemagne being its founder.<\/p>

To begin with, it is a fabricated story<\/a><\/span><\/span>, as is often the case with national narratives. But what is relevant here is that a great villain is extolled, to the point that historians highlight his cruelty compared to other medieval monarchs, which was difficult in such a bloody era.<\/span> <\/p>

He spent almost his entire life waging war on new territories where looting, rape, and murder were common, but with the Saxons (inhabitants of what we now call Northern Germany, from Frankfurt to Denmark) he reached the highest level of brutality, as they were an ethno-religious group distinct from Christian Europeans.<\/p>

Despite all this, Andorra has dedicated its national anthem to this criminal against humanity, calling him father. And, as if that weren’t enough, it has chosen his name to designate its university and its main street. <\/p>
