LET US LIVE WITHOUT HARM!: LET US JUDGE FAIRLY

Some say that we should not judge. However, without value judgments there would be no justice, only the law of the strongest and of personal convenience. If we assume that nothing is wrong, the result would be a state of barbarism in which abuses and cruelties would multiply.

It is true that, objectively, nothing is good or bad; everything is neutral. In matters of ethics, no one holds the truth. That is, all atrocities against innocents—such as the Jewish Holocaust, the subjugation of women to their husbands, or their rape as part of the spoils of war—are neither good nor bad, but merely neutral phenomena that occur in nature, like a rainbow or a storm.

However, if we do not wish to live in hell, it is necessary to start from a notion of good and evil—for example, considering that slavery, crucifixion, impalement, or torture are immoral. Because as long as there is a belief that they are right, they are normalised and become a social practice.

On the contrary, it is when they are regarded as wrong that they tend to disappear. From that point onward come judgment and condemnation, with negative consequences that discourage committing such acts. This cause-and-effect relationship is similar to a car: if you want it to move, you have to press the accelerator; if you do not, it will remain stationary.

If we were to choose cultural relativism, we would be endorsing the practice carried out in China, Japan, or other Asian countries of burying children—and especially girls—ALIVE beneath the foundations of important buildings so that they would be solid. And also the more general practice of trampling on others because I want to, because I can, and because I gain some benefit from it.

Judging is healthy, provided it is done fairly, that is:

  • Only those who cause harm and are not acting in legitimate self-defence, whether of oneself or of others.
  • Always against the aggressor, never against an innocent person… read more in…

HOW TO LIVE WITHOUT HARM?: Let us not make the righteous pay for the sinners

It is not ethical to judge someone by the way they dress, but it is ethical to judge them for bullying. It is not upright to do so because of skin colour, but it is ethical to do so for committing a terrorist act or taking advantage of public benefits. It is not noble to condemn someone for their sexual orientation, but it is ethical to do so for being homophobic.

Moreover, condemnation must be proportional to the degree of abuse committed… read more in…

Therefore, let us not follow the herd to judge unfairly, nor be conservative with cultural norms that lead to immoral condemnation.
