LIVE WITHOUT HARMING!: LET US NOT BE DO-GOODERS, BUT TRULY GOOD

Do-goodism consists of being excessively understanding, indulgent, and protective toward perpetrators, almost as much as or even more than toward the victim themselves.

It focuses too much on the causes that drove the former to commit abuse, on understanding why they did it, potentially even leading to the aggressor being considered a victim of such external factors. Instead of prioritizing the victim’s right to just restitution from the abuser, it tends to shift responsibility away from the latter and attribute it to others, such as society as a whole, social inequality, etc.

For example, following a major Islamist attack in the United States, a certain do-gooder journalist shifted the blame from the terrorists to the right to bear arms and, by extension, to American society in general. However, this argument is as flimsy as water vapor, since that right does not exist in Europe, yet jihadists still manufacture bombs in their homes.

Due to this differing legislation, those in the Old Continent are forced to seek other narratives to justify the outrages of Islamic fundamentalists. For instance, regarding the attack on Las Ramblas in Barcelona, which caused 16 deaths and around a hundred injuries, some attributed it to inequality and economic conditions. However, it was later revealed that the terrorist’s father received significant social aid despite earning a substantial income from his work.

LIVING WITHOUT HARMING: Let us reject narratives that justify cruelty

Another typical narrative regarding jihadist attacks in Europe is to claim they are due to mental health issues. However, what a coincidence that when this happens, the attackers always shout “Allahu akbar!” and not “For Jesus Christ,” “For Buddha,” or “For freedom.” Could it be that the cause is not a psychological disorder, but rather Islamist indoctrination? After all, what sense does it make for there to be such a strong correlation between a lack of mental health and one specific religion, but not others?

Another excuse used to shift responsibility away from radicalized Islamists and onto the host society is to blame the latter for discriminating against them, excluding them, and failing to provide opportunities. However, ex-Muslims who know the subject intimately from first-hand experience assert that this is not the case; rather, the true cause lies in the powerful Islamist indoctrination networks composed of fundamentalist mosques, madrasas, centers, and social media.

Similarly, when faced with the horrors of the past, there is always some suspiciously sympathetic soul. For example, regarding the slavery practiced by our ancestors, some do-gooders exonerate them by claiming they did it because they believed Black people were not human, but animals. As if it were a simple misunderstanding, and as if that absolved them of responsibility for all the suffering they caused and of which they were fully aware.

Another argument they use (for example, regarding human sacrifice) is that we should not judge past civilizations by our current values. But without value judgments, there can be no justice, and the law of the strongest would prevail, making the world a living hell.

FOR A WORLD WITHOUT HARM: Let us judge with justice

And they do the same with other present-day cultures, resorting to cultural relativism. That is, they consider the ways of thinking and acting of other peoples to be as valid as our own. Does that mean the Nazi way of thinking and their actions toward Jews and the millions of other victims are as good as those who fought against such human rights violations?

Do-gooders justify and excuse villains, which can lead to the social normalization of evil and, consequently, to impunity. To make matters worse, these defenders of scoundrels often apply double standards, such as being lenient with Islamic terrorists but not with those on the far right, or being indulgent toward human rights violations committed by the Israeli government but not those of Hamas, and so on.

Do-goodism lies somewhere between complicity and aiding and abetting crimes and abuses. Depending on the case, it may fit into the first category, the second, or the borderline between them. It focuses more on the perpetrator than on the victim, when justice requires that the victim be at the center, so that they may be protected and receive restitution.
