LET US LIVE WITHOUT HARMING: LET US REJECT OCTOPUS FARMS

WATCH VIDEO

Breeding octopuses in captivity, or octopus mariculture, is an emerging practice that has generated considerable controversy within the scientific community and among animal rights advocates.

These animals are intelligent, capable of solving complex problems, using tools, and exhibiting playful behavior. Their brains, highly developed compared to those of other invertebrates, enable them to display a wide range of social and survival behaviors. They also have heightened sensitivity, meaning they can experience pain and suffering to a significant degree.

Conditions on octopus farms are appalling:

  1. Overcrowding. In nature, these cephalopods are solitary and territorial, preferring to live in large and varied spaces. Farms, however, typically keep them in small and crowded tanks where they cannot carry out natural behaviors such as exploring and seeking shelter. This confinement can cause extreme stress and lead to self-destructive behaviors.
  2. Lack of stimulation. These creatures require mental stimulation to stay healthy. In captivity, the lack of environmental enrichment can cause boredom and chronic stress. As a result, under these conditions, these animals often show signs of psychological distress, such as self-mutilation and lethargy.
  3. Handling and slaughter. Common practices are cruel, involving painful and stressful procedures.

On the other hand, these farms cause environmental harm, as they generate waste and pollution that can negatively affect surrounding marine ecosystems. Uneaten food, chemicals, and excrement can degrade water quality and harm local marine life.

Let us do something so that society reconsiders its relationship with these animals and considers more sustainable and ethical alternatives.
