There is a component of goodness and another of evil within movements aimed at social improvement.
The social democratic desire to improve the harsh (if not extremely harsh) conditions of the working class in the 19th century stemmed from empathy, especially when those fighting for it were not victims of it themselves, as was the case with Engels, the son of a wealthy German industrialist. It also arises from sensitivity when you suffer upon learning that many workers end their days exhausted, alienated, and without time for themselves after shifts that, in some places and times, reached 18 hours a day of work that was also repetitive, boring, and arduous.
It also stems from human kindness when you feel compassion upon seeing parents force children to work long hours, and factory or mine foremen beat them if they fall asleep on the job. Consequently, you wish to end exhausting work schedules and child labor. It emanates from a sense of ethics when you witness a worker having an accident in a factory with their weaving machine, leaving them in destitution, forced to beg in the streets, and this makes you feel uneasy, prompting you to want to prevent such situations through social security. And that a protective state be created to prevent such situations, or to prevent a child orphaned by both parents from also being left on the streets at the mercy of criminal gangs who exploit them.
In contrast, the dictatorship of the proletariat, through a violent revolution by which a minority seeks to impose its dominance on the majority, and moreover steals private property acquired through honest effort, stems from the dark side of human nature. Also belonging to the realm of human miseries are envy, the greed for others’ possessions accompanied by the desire to steal them, authoritarianism, the abuse of innocents, and taking advantage of workers’ dissatisfactions to vainly satisfy one’s own needs for relevance, power, enrichment, etc.

In fact, psychological research has shown a correlation between psychopathy and narcissism with authoritarian communism, as well as that many militants within this type of communism, under the guise of fighting for a more just society, are actually selfishly seeking to satisfy their ego’s needs, committing cruelties against others if necessary. An example is Chávez, selfishly interested in reducing the bulk of the Venezuelan population to poor dependents of the state in order to remain in power, as can be seen in this video:

Stalin confessed that he was a product of the Communist Party, having been trained within it from a young age, and was entrusted with the mission of robbing businesses to raise funds for the party. Stalin probably already had a congenital malice significantly greater than average, but the influence of the Communist Party and Marxist ideology likely exacerbated that malice. Although there are honorable exceptions like Gorbachev, most politicians forged by communism are abusive, ranging from mildly hypocritical and unjust to extremely corrupt and thieving, as well as ruthless if it suits their own interests.

The good news is that although we all congenitally have a malicious side, all or almost all of us also have a luminous side where our innate sense of justice resides. And that inner sense of ethics knows that causing harm to others is wrong, except in legitimate self-defense and defense of others. Therefore, if you are a communist and genuinely want a better world, the best thing you can do is adopt a reformist, liberal, and benign stance towards that ideology, as Gorbachev did.
