LET US LIVE WITHOUT HARMING! LET US RESPECT PROSTITUTES

One group of innocent people who have been particularly victimized by human malice over many centuries, and continue to be so, are prostitutes.

I realized this injustice during my adolescence. I believe the first day I became aware of it was when I was on a bus from Barcelona to Castelldefels; there were three men pointing at a sex worker on the shoulder of the highway, calling her a “slut” while simultaneously feeling sexual desire for her—attraction and contempt at the same time.

A socially widespread contempt reflected in the large number of derogatory terms invented and popularized throughout history to designate these innocent women: whore, harlot, slut, etc. These are words to which society has given such degrading connotations that they are used as insults, including the frequently used “son of a bitch”—a great lack of respect for children who bear no blame, born of women who do no harm to anyone.

Due to this social denigration, when prostitutes protest against the prohibition of their profession, they usually do so wearing masks, face coverings, or other garments to hide themselves, as they feel ashamed. What kind of society is ours that strips the dignity from human beings who harm no one?

The rejection of these women leads to them being generally excluded and stigmatized, making it unthinkable in many social circles to include any of them. This is true even in the Netherlands, the pioneer in the protection of these professionals (as well as in other areas). There, they are legalized, registered with Social Security like any other profession, and protected; yet even such an open, tolerant, and advanced society still unfairly marginalizes them.

Social discrimination and exclusion often cause moral damage to all or nearly all their victims (such as low self-esteem, loneliness, a sense of being marginalized and oppressed, etc.), sometimes to a great extent, even leading to suicide.

Prostitutes face multiple hardships in their daily lives, especially from conservative religious people, such as being barred from renting housing or purchasing products and services because they are considered “sinners” or “immoral.” They also face rejection from family and friends, and sometimes harassment, physical violence, and other forms of abuse. In some countries, they are outlawed, which further contributes to people seeing them as criminals and to police and authorities treating them harshly.

This non-inclusive or even hostile environment leads both them and their parents and children to feel ashamed. Sometimes, the latter are victims of bullying and social isolation at school because of their mother’s profession.

Why so much malice toward innocent people? The origin of this malignancy lies mainly in puritanical morality, which remains very present in traditionalist religious environments, but also, to a lesser extent, in more secularized, open, and modern circles, as remnants of the past still persist.

Let us free ourselves from this burden; let us stop trampling on the reputation and honor of sex workers, because the reality is that they do no harm to anyone. On the contrary: they satisfy the vital needs of others and thus contribute to their well-being. The prostitute-client relationship is very clean to the extent that it is freely consented to and both parties fulfill their part of the agreement: one commits to offering a sexual service and the other to paying a certain amount of money.

Another source of rejection of the commercialization of sex is the morality of Marxist heritage. Read more at…

FOR A WORLD WITHOUT HARM: Let us prevent the far-left from harming prostitutes and their clients

Let us learn from countries that protect prostitutes, such as the Netherlands, New Zealand, Switzerland, or Australia, through labor rights, protection against violence and exploitation, access to medical services, assistance, and exit programs for those who wish to use them.

What can a well-intentioned person do to help sex workers? Above all, respect them, treat them as equals, normalize them, and include them. Secondly, support laws that protect them and take them into account—more inclusive laws, as called for by the United Nations, the World Health Organization, Amnesty International, or Human Rights Watch.

And also share. By doing so, you will contribute to a happier and fairer world to live in.

Thank you,

Xavier Paya
