LET'S LIVE WITHOUT HARM!: LET'S ACKNOWLEDGE THE SUFFERING CAUSED BY COMMUNISM AND SIMILAR IDEOLOGIES

The damage caused by communism and other Marxist-derived ideologies is immense:

SOVIET COMMUNISM

Genocides and famines that caused 62 million deaths; gulags (forced labor camps) to which they sent 18 million victims; horrific torture; repression, oppression, and terror. Also a low standard of living (less than one-third of that in the United States) and low subjective well-being. Read more at…

LET’S AVOID HARM!: Let’s remember the atrocities committed by Soviet communism so they never happen again

EUROPEAN COMMUNISM

The European satellite countries of the USSR followed the same model as their big brother. Human rights violations were far less massive, but still significant. In fact, the European Parliament has condemned Communism, stating that massive human rights violations occurred in all ex-communist European countries.

Even Tito, whose regime was the most liberal and closest to the West within the Eastern Bloc, committed cruelties such as throwing those suspected of opposing the regime or ethnic minorities (like Italians) alive into foibas, which are deep natural holes where victims fell one on top of another and piled up until they died.

Economically, the per capita income of Western Europe was up to 6 TIMES HIGHER than in the Eastern Bloc. One only needs to compare, for example, East and West Germany. Before the advent of communism, the former had areas among the richest in the world, such as Berlin and Saxony, but due to that ideology, it became much poorer than the latter.

Millions of workers were exploited with ever-higher production targets and low wages, which were sometimes even reduced instead of increased.

And something similar to the USSR can be said about the average scores of subjective well-being, as well as the climate of omnipresent espionage of the entire population, denunciations, and fear. The dissatisfaction of millions of citizens led to popular uprisings such as that in the German Democratic Republic in 1953, the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, the attempted liberalization of the Prague Spring in ’68, or the strikes in Poland, all of which were relentlessly crushed with tanks and repression.

As a consequence of all the above, some 30 million inhabitants of communist Europe emigrated to the West. In contrast, there has been hardly any emigration in the opposite direction. Why could this be?

The communist system was so incredibly attractive that they had to prohibit emigration to the West, both in the USSR and its satellite countries, to prevent the emptying of these countries.

The poor inhabitants became so fed up with Communism that after the arrival of democracy, they have never again voted for a communist government in any of those countries.

Ultimately, it is the objective figures and data that matter, not propaganda.

ASIAN COMMUNISM

Between 45 and over 100 million died due to genocides, famines, persecution, forced labor camps, and mass executions.

The above was accompanied by great poverty, with per capita incomes 22 times lower in North Korea compared to South Korea and several times lower in communist China (before its transition to capitalism) than in Taiwan or Hong Kong. Read more at…

AMERICAN COMMUNISM

Cuba, thanks to Fidel Castro, has gone from being one of the countries with the highest per capita income in the Americas to one of the poorest. Currently, there are no official economic data, but the purchasing power of the population is extremely low (except for the Privileged Communist Caste), with even basic food and medicine lacking.

As a result of this, and because it is a repressive dictatorship where freedom is lacking, millions of Cubans have emigrated to the United States and other liberal capitalist democracies, but this phenomenon does not happen in reverse—unless it is to work in a privileged executive position at a Western hotel chain. Again, why might that be? Is everyone stupid except communists, who are the only ones who know what is good for everyone?

In Venezuela, Chavismo has caused the country to lose 75% of its wealth and to go from one of the few full democracies in the world to an authoritarian and repressive regime.

… LET’S AVOID HARM!: Let’s be aware of the harms of Chavismo so they don’t spread to other countries

The Venezuelan economic disaster is reminiscent, on a much larger scale, of what happened in Argentina. In the first decades of the 20th century, when there was a liberal economic policy, this country was one of the richest in terms of per capita income, not only in the Americas but worldwide, rivaling even Great Britain, which was the richest. This changed radically with the arrival of Peronism and its statist interventionism, from which point the economy has deteriorated, leaving 57% of the population in poverty.

For this reason, that nation has gone from being a magnet that attracted millions of European immigrants (Spanish, Italian, French, German, British, from Eastern countries, etc.) in search of a better life (in fact, the port of Buenos Aires was, along with those of New York and Havana, the main destination for European emigration) to the current Argentina from which increasingly millions are fleeing (and the last one to turn off the light).

AFRICAN COMMUNISM

In Ethiopia, between 210,000 and 317,000 died of hunger, considered a government-orchestrated genocide. I am not counting hundreds of thousands of other deaths from hunger simply due to famine, as famines also occurred under the previous feudal regime of Emperor Selassie.

In Somalia, between 50,000 and 200,000 innocent civilians were killed in the Isaaq Genocide, and the second and third largest cities were razed, with destruction percentages of 90% and 70% respectively. All of this led to 900,000 refugees and displaced persons, resulting in the creation of the world’s largest refugee camp.

To the above must be added widespread large-scale corruption in both communist and socialist countries. The nationalization of abundant natural resources and limited industry has made it easy for rulers to plunder these countries. Like Isabel dos Santos, daughter of the former president of Angola, considered the richest woman in Africa and one of the richest in the world with a fortune of over $3 billion. If she and the rest of the corrupt politicians had managed the country’s vast oil resources well, it is possible that its inhabitants would be as rich as Norwegians.

And something similar can be said of other countries on that continent rich in hydrocarbons, diamonds, gold, etc. The armed robbery of public assets, along with hindering private initiative, has created the perfect runway for widespread poverty despite great wealth in natural resources and land.

In conclusion, communism and other Marxist ideologies have been disastrous, like an earthquake of magnitude 8 on the Richter scale, on all continents where they have been implemented, causing great damage and suffering. Why don’t we learn our lesson once and for all?
