According to various reports on human rights and freedoms, the countries where women have the least freedom are:
- Saudi Arabia
- Afghanistan
- Iran
- Yemen
- Somalia
All of them are Muslim.
On the other hand, according to studies by organizations such as the World Economic Forum, the countries with the greatest gender inequality are:
- Yemen
- Pakistan
- Chad
- Syria
- Iran
Again, all of them are Muslim.
What does the Quran say about this?
WOMEN MUST REMAIN IN THEIR HOMES
Quran 33:33:
“Settle in your homes, and do not display yourselves as women did in the days of pre-Islamic ignorance”.
Here, the Quran advises women to remain in their homes and adopt a modest way of life, which is seen as a restriction compared to men.
WOMEN MUST BE COVERED AND KEEP THEIR HEADS DOWN
Quran 24:31:
“And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity, and not to reveal their adornments except what normally appears. Let them draw their veils over their chests, and not reveal their hidden adornments except to their husbands, their fathers, their fathers-in-law, their sons, their stepsons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons or sisters’ sons, their fellow women, those bondwomen in their possession, male attendants with no desire, or children who are still unaware of women’s nakedness. Let them not stomp their feet, drawing attention to their hidden adornments”.
Quran 33:59:
“O Prophet! Ask your wives, daughters, and believing women to draw their cloaks over their bodies“.
Similar to the previous verse, this one obliges women to cover themselves, which is a restriction on their individual freedom that does not apply to men.
Something similar is stated in Quran 24:60.
POLYGAMY AND HAREMS ONLY FOR MEN
Quran 4:3:
“If you fear you might fail to give orphan women their due rights if you were to marry them, then marry other women of your choice—two, three, or four. But if you are afraid you will fail to maintain justice, then content yourselves with one or those bondwomen in your possession.”
This verse allows polygamy and the keeping of a harem of slaves, which contrasts with the strict monogamy expected of women.
INFERIORIZATION AND SUBMISSION TO MEN
Several verses in the Quran speak of women being worth half as much as men, as well as women being inferior and therefore men having authority over them. Furthermore, there are Hadiths that objectify them, considering them as sexual objects or even as toys for men, or that denigrate them, claiming they are mentally deficient and lack virtue. LET’S FREE WOMEN FROM ALL THIS NOW!
Fortunately, there are more and more progressive Islamic scholars and modernist Muslims, such as the Islamic feminist movement, who oppose all of the above, advocating for women’s freedom and gender equality based on Islamic principles of justice and dignity. They contextualize and reinterpret the Quran in a way that aligns with modern principles of gender equality and human rights. They highlight the verses of said book that promote justice, compassion, respect, and equality.
