Religion remains a central aspect in the lives of millions of people. However, its teachings are interpreted and practiced in very diverse ways. Therefore, adopting benign, tolerant, and respectful versions is not only convenient but essential for building a happier world, where no one harms others in the name of their beliefs.
The liberal and cruelty-free versions of different faiths promote peace, human and civil rights, and treating others well. By emphasizing universal values such as love, compassion, and justice, these interpretations help build bridges with those who live their lives differently from what their doctrine establishes. Religious tolerance fosters respect for different modus pensandi and operandi that do not harm innocents, as well as the recognition of diversity as a wealth, not a threat.

Some people say that different versions of their own religion do not exist, but that there is only one, that of their sacred books. But, in reality, there are very divergent approaches, from the most benevolent to the most harmful.
LIVING WITHOUT HARMING!: Let’s interpret religious precepts within their historical context
WHAT TYPES OF VERSIONS EXIST?
To begin with, there is a great difference between a tolerant and progressive version and a traditionalist one. And within the latter, there is also an enormous variation between moderate and fundamentalist conservatism. But specifically, how do they differ? We will understand this with 6 concrete examples:
1.- Homosexuality in the 3 Abrahamic religions:
- Fundamentalists: they murder, sometimes in very cruel ways.
- Conservatives: prison, physical and psychological assaults, lynchings, rejection, stigmatization, and being treated as inferior. Also families who expel their teenage children from their homes, friends who reject them, and companies that fire their employees. At a milder level: prohibition of gay pride parades and all types of external displays of affection between homosexuals, as in Turkey, even being criminalized with prison sentences in countries like Russia or Belarus.
- Progressives: tolerance and respect

LIVING WITHOUT HARMING!: Nor the LGTBI+ community
AVOIDING HARM!: Let’s collaborate to eradicate anti-LGTBI malice
2.- Women who exercise their sexual freedom:
- Fundamentalists: from punishment to murder.
- Conservatives: contempt, stigmatization, rejection, gossiping, pointing fingers, families who throw their pregnant unmarried daughters onto the street, friends who repudiate them, and employers who fire them.
- Progressives: tolerance and respect.
LIVING WITHOUT HARMING!: Nor sexually free and promiscuous women
AVOIDING HARM IN ISLAM!: Repression of sexual freedom
AVOIDING HARM IN CHRISTIANITY!: Victimization of sexually free people
3.- People who criticize religion:
- Fundamentalists: they kill.
- Conservatives: they imprison, they assault.
- Progressives: tolerance and respect.
AVOIDING HARM IN ISLAM!: Cruelty toward those who criticize Islam
4.- Widows in Hinduism:
- Fundamentalists: they burn them alive.
- Conservatives: they throw them onto the street to live on alms, they denigrate them.
- Progressives: shelter, inclusion, respect for their rights and dignity
AVOIDING HARM IN HINDUISM!: Machismo
5.- People who leave Islam:
- Fundamentalists: they kill.
- Conservatives: they imprison them, strip them of civil rights (such as inheritance, parental rights, or marriage), assault them, and stigmatize them.
- Progressives: tolerance and respect.
AVOIDING HARM IN ISLAM!: Murder and mistreatment of those who have left this religion
6.- Animals:
- Fundamentalists: objectification, great cruelty.
Read LIVING WITHOUT HARMING!: Let’s not objectify
- Conservatives: abuses and evils of different degrees.
- Progressives: respect, empathy, and compassion.
Traditionalist versions of religion often impose a rigid and exclusionary vision, which can lead to discrimination, intolerance, devaluation, and even hatred toward those who do not share their strict dogmas. In extreme cases, these positions foster fanaticism and violence, transforming the lives of innocents into a true ordeal. Throughout history, religious fundamentalism has caused countless conflicts, from holy wars to acts of terrorism. These interpretations not only damage the image of religions but also divide societies, leaving behind a legacy of suffering and discord.

LIVING WITHOUT HARMING!: Let’s oppose poisonous dogmatism
Adopting a reformist and respectful version of each faith allows it to evolve and adapt to modern times. Progressive and inclusive interpretations seek to reconcile traditional teachings with the rights of women, LGTBI+ individuals, animals, freedom, etc.
In conclusion, selecting the best variant of each creed is a decision that extends beyond the personal practice of faith. It is a choice that affects society as a whole, peace, and human development. By opting for benevolent, tolerant, and liberal interpretations, a more just and harmonious world can be built. Read more at…
