LIVE WITHOUT HARMING!: DO NOT GRIND LIVE CHICKS

Billions of LIVE chicks are ground up every year (HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS over decades) despite being creatures that feel pain, similar to human babies, as science has shown. The reason is that instead of considering them for what they are—sentient beings deserving of respect and rights—they are treated as mere things that we can trample on at will.

Now imagine that aliens dominate us and dedicate themselves to breeding humans to obtain products they desire. And one of the things they do for that purpose is to capture millions of women and lock them up for life, crowded in cages in large warehouses without natural light. They inseminate them, and at the moment of birth, as soon as the baby is born, it is taken from its mother. And the male newborns that are of no interest are discarded by throwing them into a grinder. It sounds like a harsh science fiction movie, doesn’t it?

Well, that is exactly what we do with male chicks. Some will say that they cannot be compared to human babies, as they believe that one should not empathize with sentient beings that do not belong to our species, race, or ethnicity, considering it absurd sentimentality.

Applying the label of inferior beings or, even worse, objectifying them (reducing them to mere objects) allows for the lack of empathy necessary to exploit, abuse, and mistreat while remaining largely or totally indifferent. Labeling gives many the justification they need to consider that many sentient beings “do not count” and exist for our use and enjoyment, allowing us to use and abuse them (use and discard).

DO NOT GRIND LIVE CHICKS

In some more advanced countries, such as Switzerland, the grinding of chicks has already been banned. Instead, they use a much more civilized system to determine the sex within the eggs. This has a higher cost, which is why farms oppose it, as they seek to optimize profit at the expense of others’ suffering. And the same largely happens with most consumers: they primarily want cheap meat, eggs, and dairy, even if it is at the expense of harming others.

But we are not only hyper-predation and negative selfishness (seeking good things for ourselves and our loved ones at the expense of others); we also have an innate sense of justice in a part of our brain that tells us what is right and what is wrong. That is why I appeal to your congenital sense of ethics to sign the Animal Equality campaign against the grinding of live chicks.

It is good to move from negative selfishness to a healthy kind, which consists of being as happy as possible without harming others, preferably also contributing to building a better world for everyone to live in—a happier world with less abuse and cruelty.
