LET US LIVE WITHOUT HARM! LET US STOP CLERGY FROM PROMOTING HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS

Abdullah bin Radi Almoaede Al Shammari

It is a reality that fanatical imams, intransigent pastors and intolerant priests encourage the passing of laws that violate human and civil rights and deliver sermons that encourage doing so, especially in Muslim-majority countries and in Africa.

HOW TO LIVE WITHOUT HARM? Let us respect others

1. OPPRESSIVE LAWS

In Muslim-majority countries, there is pressure from traditionalist clergy (for example, Wahhabi imams in Saudi Arabia) for laws to be in accordance with Sharia. This is one of the reasons why in many of those states there are regulations that violate international standards for the human rights of women, girls, LGBTQI+, atheists, agnostics, Jews, Christians, Hindus, etc. They also tend to be oppressive toward those who leave Islam (apostasy), criticize that religion (blasphemy), etc. Read more…

Something similar happens in countries with a conservative Christian majority, especially in Africa. On that continent, over recent years, regulations have been introduced to punish those who have sex with people of the same sex with prison sentences and even death, due to pressure exerted, in this order, by evangelical pastors, Muslim imams, and Catholic priests, all of them traditionalists. When an innocent person is imprisoned, it is called kidnapping, and when they are killed, it is called murder.

FOR A WORLD WITHOUT HARM: LET US SEE the harmful side of religions

Likewise, in some traditionalist Christian countries, they have succeeded in criminalizing women who do not dress according to their puritanical codes, as well as creating an oppressive environment in which men publicly strip women who follow such guidelines. There are also other types of laws that cause harm to innocent victims, such as blasphemy laws.

On the other hand, in the Russian Federation and other countries under its influence, lobbying for legislation that violates human and civil rights has also been successfully carried out by the patriarch and the priests of the Russian Orthodox Church. And even in the West, part of the Christian clergy exerts pressure, sometimes successfully and sometimes not, for laws to prohibit same-sex marriage, euthanasia, the abortion of non-sentient fetuses, etc.

Therefore, one component of reforming religions (as important as the brakes on a car) to make them 100% benign consists of stopping the promotion of this type of legislation that harms others. And reversing the harm caused by pushing for the repeal of those harmful religiously-based laws they managed to introduce. To achieve this, it is necessary for believers and religious leaders of good faith to explicitly and firmly oppose the above, convince others, and exert pressure.

THE ART OF LIVING WITHOUT HARM: LET US REFORM the harmful side of religions

LET US AVOID HARM!: Let us apply pressure to change the harmful side of religions

THE REVOLUTION OF LIVING WITHOUT HARM: Let us speak loud and clear against injustice

Anyone has the right to believe that certain ways of living life are preferable, but never to impose them on others as long as they do not cause harm other than in legitimate self-defense, nor to cause them suffering for not following those preferences.

LET US NOT HARM ANYONE!

2. SERMONS OF EVIL

SERMONS

The path toward fully respectful and harmless religions includes not only avoiding harmful legal promotion but also social promotion, such as the fostering of hatred and mistreatment in society toward the LGBTQI+ community, atheists, agnostics, Jews, believers of other religions, those critical of the faith in question, women exercising their sexual freedom, and other groups that do not fit into their dogmas. This is happening especially in Muslim-majority and traditionalist Christian countries by imams, pastors, priests, bishops, and cardinals, including one who was among the nominees for Pope.

A religious organization that claims to be benign and tolerant cannot consent to the above, and must attempt to persuade that part of the clergy to refrain from sowing hatred and malice. If this is not achieved, it is advisable to remove the recalcitrant individuals from their positions, like a doctor who uses a scalpel to separate malignant tumors from a body so that it can heal.

What can a noble and decent person do to avoid all that malice?
